Nutrients and hydrography

BED includes chemical and hydrographical sets since 1877. These data are available for everybody on the Internet via Das and Nest with the exception of the 5 last years and some specific datasets. To access these restricted data the user must get permission of the data contributor. In this case the user shall contact us.


The data currently available are Hydrography and Chemistry, coupled to their respective master record in the Stations table by a unique ID number as show in this picture.

The station table includes, as you could see in the structure table, a field named GROUPCODE where the different sources are coded. An additional field with the SHIP that was used is also included.

The same ship can be used by different groups. In order to help you to give the adequate acknowledgement, the following  link displays a table where you can see which groups have used the different ships.

In the year 2009 BNI started a partnership with IOW, NERI, SMHI and SYKE to create a system of distributed databases where each one of the partners made the data hosted in their respective databases publicly available, together with all public domain data in BED, via the latest versions of the BNI applications DAS (Data Assimilation System) and NEST.

The result of this partnership is the successive creation of the following distributed databases:

Marine Monitoring Centre of Institute of Aquatic Ecology. University of Latvia has also granted public access. Should you use data please cite these Institutes.

To see a graphical presentation of the number of stations per year, please follow this link. In this case, the information behind these graphs includes all above mentioned distributed databases and may become outdated very soon, due to updates in all of them.

A first attempt to separate Coastal and Open Sea Stations in BED was made recently and the results are displayed in this map. This is the total number of station positions regardless dates and sources of data.
